Messages is where you talk to colleagues in writing. A message to one person is a direct message; a conversation with several people is a channel. Either way it's the same thread on every device, and the same gesture that places a call sends a message.

Message someone, or start a channel

  1. Open Messages and click the + next to the heading.

  2. In New message, type the names of one or more colleagues.

  3. Click Create.

The New message dialog, where you add one or more people

One name opens a direct message. Two or more creates a channel.

From the calls bar

Press ⌘K, type a colleague's name, and press Shift+Enter instead of Enter. The direct message opens with the cursor in the message box.

In a conversation

  • Type and press Enter to send.

  • Share files and voice notes in the thread.

  • Start a video meeting with everyone in the conversation.

  • Search all your messages with the magnifying glass at the top of the list.

Good to know

  • Read receipts are on by default. Turn them off under Settings > General.

Settings > General, with the Start page picker and the Read receipts switch
  • Notifications for messages are set under Settings > Notifications, including a quiet window if you don't want them in the evening.

  • To delete a conversation, click the name at the top of it and choose Delete conversation.
